Sound Garage: Westbottoms Vibe Check
The last Thursday in May brought perfect weather, the kind that demands you find a reason to be out. I fired up the AMG GTC and headed for the Westbottoms, where the industrial skeletons of old Kansas City hide some of the best gatherings. Sound Garage was posted up at In The Lowest Ferns, a name that perfectly understates the venue’s cavernous, moody interior. Outside, the gravel lots and narrow streets were packed with a wild assortment of machinery and a thick crowd moving between the cars and the sound bleeding from inside. The air was heavy with the low thrum of engines and a deep bassline, a signal that this was more than just a car meet.
The automotive obsession outside was replaced by a more primal, rhythmic one inside.
The variety was the real story. A classic, deep blue Porsche 930 held its ground with quiet authority, a stark contrast to the pair of Miami Blue Porsches that screamed for attention against the brickwork. Not far off, a Baja Bug sat with its guts exposed, ready for a desert it will likely never see in these parts. You had everything from a slammed Civic with a wild front-end swap to a battle-ready FJ Cruiser. I slipped inside The Lowest Ferns, and the world shifted. The bright sun gave way to a dark, red-lit space where DJs spun from a candlelit booth. The automotive obsession outside was replaced by a more primal, rhythmic one inside.
